Khonsu is the ancient Egyptian god of the Moon. His name can be embraced in a myriad of connotations from “Traveler,” "Embracer," "Pathfinder," to "Defender." He oversees those who travel at night, which may relate to the perception of the moon's nocturnal travels in the sky. He is also known as the god of light and night, the creator of peoples destinies.
During the New Kingdom period in Egypt, Khonsu was worshiped as the moon god and the god of love and fertility. It is not uncommon for civilizations to associate the moon with fertility, as the moon is believed to be related to the menstrual cycle.
Since he is the god of the Moon, he is also depicted as a moon symbol. In particular, he wears a crescent-shaped pendant necklace. When the Egyptians did not depict Khonsu as a mummy, they usually depicted him with a falcon head, in which case the moon symbol above his head symbolized his character.
